The SS United States, currently moored at Pier 82 in Philadelphia, faces eviction by September 12, 2024, due to a legal dispute over dockage fees. The SS United States Conservancy, which owns the vessel, is actively seeking a new berth on the East Coast and raising funds for the costly relocation, which requires tugboats, insurance, and dock preparations. The ship, once the fastest transatlantic liner, remains structurally sound but has been stripped of its interior fittings.

Plans for redeveloping the ship into a mixed-use destination, including a hotel, museum, and public green space, have been proposed in partnership with RXR Realty and MCR Hotels.

These plans are contingent on securing a permanent home for the vessel. If a new berth cannot be found, the conservancy may resort to scrapping the ship or sinking it as an artificial reef, both of which would be last-resort measures to preserve its legacy in some form
