The World's Largest Cruise Ship Just Set Sail For The First Time Ever

Cruise ships have become so large that some can resemble small cities floating on the ocean rather than vessels with a few hundred people on board. These humongous boats can now welcome thousands of guests and offer all the amenities of a small city.

Passengers can choose among various restaurants, bars, cafés, and entertainment options, with some ships even featuring entire water parks on board. Over the last few decades, cruise companies worldwide have been competing to build the largest cruise ships ever to sail the ocean. Royal Caribbean has just won this title by debuting its Star of the Seas, the largest cruise ship now sailing around the world.

Royal Caribbean’s STAR OF THE SEAS has just left for its first voyage, starting its hopefully very long career traveling through the world’s oceans and seas. But how big is this ship? This megaship features 20 decks, of which 18 are for guests, and can welcome up to 5,610 people, the size of a small European city. In addition, 2,350 crew members will also be on board operating the ship while providing guests with all kinds of services.

According to a press release, when STAR OF THE SEAS was officially added to the Royal Caribbean family in July, Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said:
The delivery of STAR OF THE SEAS marks another bold step forward in Royal Caribbean Group’s journey to reimagine the future of vacations. Star and the Icon Class are a symbol of what’s possible when innovation, imagination and our relentless focus on delivering exceptional experiences come together, ultimately creating unforgettable memories for millions of families and vacationers.

The ship has a 248,663 gross tonnage and measures 1,196 feet in length, 219 feet in width, and 29 feet in draft. The STAR OF THE SEAS offers a plethora of entertainment for passengers; however, a trip on the world’s largest ship isn’t inexpensive. The most affordable ticket is about $950 per passenger. This can be quite expensive, especially for those hoping to enjoy the experience with their family or partner. Despite this, plenty of people have already booked their tickets.

The STAR OF THE SEAS departed from Orlando Harbor on August 31 for its inaugural voyage, bound for the Caribbean.
