ship adrift in atlantic

The crew of the UK Royal Navy icebreaker 'HMS Protector' discovered an abandoned merchant ship drifting in mid-Atlantic on 31st August. The crew was heading to Bermudas to provide assistance on hurricane relief efforts, at the time.

“We closed the vessel to make contact and offer our assistance, but no one replied! Whilst investigations continue we’re unable to give you more detail on this strange event,” ...the UK Royal Navy informed via social media.

International media report identify the ship as the 250-foot cargo ship 'Alta' which was abandoned after confronting mechanical issues while transiting from Greece to Haiti, back in October.

While off Bermudas, the Tanzanian-flagged ship, with 10 people onboard, was unable to make repairs. The crew were stranded for 20 days before being rescued by the US Coast Guard Cutter 'Confidence'.

However, the true identity of the ship is yet to be officially determined.
