Sunday 5th September at 1130 hours
This service was dedicated to all worldwide Seafarers through Merchant Navy Day 3rd September, especially those seriously affected by the restrictive conditions of COVID-19.
Merchant Navy Day is the anniversary of the first merchant loss in World War II of the Donaldson Liner s.s Athenia, 10 hours after war had been declared, sunk by U30, with a loss of 117 lives. We also remember the recent loss of the m.v. Livestock 1, 41 crew, cargo and ship on 22nd September 2020
The Commemoration Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony held at the Cathedral recalls the endeavours, achievements and sacrifice of the men and women of the Royal Australian Navy and the Merchant Navy, who paid the supreme sacrifice.
We also recognize the 83rd Year of the Company of Master Mariners, Queensland Branch
With regard to those affected by COVID-19 restrictions, it was pleasing to see the Kiribati Sailors able to attend this service from their isolation quarters at Kangaroo Point.
We would like to thank and commend our Branch members on the Seafarers Day Committee for being able to go ahead with this Annual Service.
Father Bill Pearson gave the First Reading from the Book of Jonah, Chapter 1, Verse 4. We then recited The Sailors Psalm with Capt Dave Ellis leading. And we heard Capt Arthur Diack prayer for The Company of Master Mariners.
A good service for all those able to attend.
