The removal of the MV Tycoon wreck from Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island is complete and salvage crews are preparing to leave the island.

While the wreck removal is normally the responsibility of the owners, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) managed the wreck removal in this case. It did so due to a lack of cooperation from the owners. AMSA will be seeking to recover costs.

The salvage operation which took approximately eight weeks and removed more than 1600 tonnes of scrap metal from the ocean, was completed ahead of schedule in part due to the ideal weather conditions during the complex and difficult operation.

A dive survey has confirmed there has been minimal damage to the marine environment from this incident and further monitoring of the area will continue over the next few weeks.

AMSA wishes to thank the Christmas Island Administration, the Port’s Harbour Master and the Christmas Island community for their support and assistance throughout the project.
